Microfinance is a huge help to people like this family, where just buying two oxen can vastly improve the amount of food they are able to produce.
Duterimbere was a microfinance organization set up by 29 women in Rwanda. Jacqueline Novogratz was one of the leading figures in creating this bank and ensuring that it was mostly self sufficient. The goal of Duterimbere was to give small loans to women in Rwanda which they could use to start businesses or buy things that allowed them to make more money. The Blue Sweater, written by Jacqueline Novogratz, explains her mission to change the world. Duterimbere was the first thing she completed that had a lasting impact on the world, even after she left Africa. Africa changed Jacqueline's life, the places and the people she met always left her wanting to go back. Her mission started when she found a child in Africa wearing a blue sweater she had donated several years ago. This one moment gave her the realization that changes are being made in Africa. It gave her the inspiration to work harder in Africa and create something that she would know changed lives for the better. Experiences, such as the one Jacqueline went through, can change peoples' lives by making them open their eyes to the world around themselves. It provides people with new insights and observations that influence their following decisions. Changing the world isn't just about having good intentions, it's about having good intentions that are used with extreme perseverance until success is reached.
